The House of Shadowed Corners

The Premise

Your Circle has come together in pursuit of a legend—the famous labyrinth-manse known as the House of Shadowed Corners. Through guile, strength, and knowledge, you have managed to navigate some of its mysteries and become the first beings to survive a night in the forbidden halls of the manse since the First Age. However, you know that your past deeds will soon catch up with you, and should you wish to keep plumbing the secrets of this ancient manse, you need to make ready to withstand the Wyld Hunt, gathering allies and resources wherever you can.

Session 1: Diplomacy and Trade

Session Highlights:

The PCs met with the villagers of Bridge-on-the-Water, seeking to get the villager’s aid in spotting the incoming Wyld Hunt, although no direct mention of the Hunt was made. The village headman was suspicious, and proposed (with the assistance of Kasheem) that the PCs work to aid the village in order to earn their assistance. The headman, Bright Harvest, proposed that they rough up the wolfmen of the Red Pelt tribe to discourage raids, and the PCs agreed to look into the matter.

Once in the bamboo forest, the PCs decided to try diplomacy before violence, and sought to track Red Pelt hunters who might be contacted. While tracking the hunters, they drew the attention of the wood spirit Hollow Stalks, who drew beasts to attack them, and grew angry at Adar for her prayers to Varesha. Hollow Stalks was talked down, but his anger drew the attention of Kerag, a wolfman hunter, who brought the PCs to his packleader, Horl. With Horl’s help, the PCs met with all the other Red Pelt packleaders and were able to propose a trade agreement with the village, so that the wolfmen would gather the hallucinogenic omen flowers for the villagers, and the villagers would trade food to them in exchange. Although there was much resistance from skeptics on both sides, an initial round of exchanges seem to have set the wheels of commerce in motion, and perhaps secured peace…

Session 2: Exploring the Shadowed Corners

Session Highlights

The PCs turned their focus to the manse they had claimed, and began exploring the labyrinth within the house of Shadowed Corners. Adar summoned a pair of greenmaws as the exploration began, and over the course of the next few days, the PCs found a vault of magnificent treasure (granting all PCs increased Resources), a dangerous and enlightening set of trials amidst fire, the manse’s ruined archives, and a trophy room of ancient weapons, before finding the manse’s hearth chamber. They found the bodies of an ancient confrontation between the manse’s ancient owner and his Dragon-Blooded betrayers, and dealt with the twist ghost of the old Solar. All the PCs attuned to the manse, and Bright Wind claimed its hearthstone. When they returned to Bright Wind’s followers, they were informed that barbarians had raided Bridge-on-the-Water and seized supplies intended for the Red Pelt tribe, who were outraged by their loss.

Session 3: The Sky Axe Marauders

While the PCs made ready to investigate the events at the village, Bright Wind rode ahead, her Exalted prowess making her able to reach the village more swiftly than any mortal rider. She crossed the river from the North and found a Red Pelt camp being set up, under the guidance of Horl, who had been previously friendly to the PCs. He remained so, but also insisted that the villagers live up to their side of the bargain and pay for herbs that had been delivered, saying that the village was acting in bad faith.

Bright Wind offered to speak to the headman of the village for him, and leaped with her horse onto the raised platforms of the village, shocking Wounded Deer, who had been watching the wolfmen. She exchanged a few harsh words with Wounded Deer, who was scornful of the peace, before continuing on to Bright Harvest’s house. There, she learned that a Guild trader would be returning from the East in approximately a week (around the twenty-third day of the month) and he had hoped to secure goods for the village with the omen flowers the wolfmen had provided. However, Bright Wind managed to convince him to return the flowers as a show of good faith, and assured him that she and her companions would retrieve whatever could be gotten from the barbarian raiders.

She then returned to the Circle, sharing the news, but they continued on to the village in order to pick up the trail of the raiders in the morning. Over the night, Adar helped treat those injured in the raid, and Corona stole some cloth once used in Sighing Wind’s garments to use for her spells. The Circle then set out to track the barbarians northwards into the hills, where a fierce rainstorm blinded them to an ambush by the raiders’ rearguard. They fought through a force of over twenty barbarian warriors, led by a god-blooded champion, turning the ambush against their attackers.

Adar set to healing those injured by the attack, who were moved to within the cave from which the ambush was laid, and questioned about their tribe, the Sky Axes, most powerful of the hill tribes. They learned of Siwiss the Howler, the cruel storm spirit who led them, and Hagga the Bear, their warlike chieftain and Siwiss’ favored son. Kasheem then had the most cooperative of the prisoners deliver a message to Hagga, challenging him to meet them for single combat, or at least negotiate such a duel, within three days, saying that the prisoners would be sold to the Guild if Hagga did not respond. After sending off the messenger, he reassured the group that this callous statement was to provoke Hagga, and the group began to plan for dealing with the god-blood and his spirit father.

Session 4: Showdown with the Sky Axes

Hagga the Bear shows up to the challenge issued by Kasheem with an army of several hundred warriors, including a number of god-bloods fathered by Siwiss the Howler. The Circle slays Hagga and Siwiss, with Adar ending the spirit’s life using Ghost-Eating Technique, and Kasheem stares down Hagga’s tame bear. Intimidated by such a display, the few survivors surrender, and when their wounds are tended, some of them lead Kasheem and Bright Wind to the central camp of the Sky Axes, while Adar and Corona watch over prisoners. After talking down the aggressive posturing of Othir, a loud-mouthed tribesman, the Solar envoys find a suitable interim leader for the tribe in Nior, an elder who they believe is interested in peace. Nior helps the Solars gather food to replace what was stolen and destroyed, and they meet with their compatriots and all return to the village.

Bright Harvest is pleased to see them, and accepts the food gladly, while making sure to share it with the Red Pelt to restore trade. He informs the Solars that Sighing Wind had a vision that led him to support trade more fully (courtesy of a spell cast by Corona while the Circle waited for Hagga), but that Wounded Deer stormed out of the village in protest, and has fled to the Nations of Chei. The Circle is now waiting for the arrival of the Guild trader who is returning from the far East on the river.
